Lynne Cheney said in an MSNBC interview that, while researching her husband's genealogy for her new book, she discovered that Dick Cheney and Barack Obama have at least one thing in common: an ancestor. This isn't the first time Obama's ancestry has been in the news: the Chicago Sun-Times stated last September that he shares an ancestor with President Bush as well.

This won't change whether Mrs. Cheney plans on supporting Obama in his presidential bid, according to the linked CNN article. Question for you CNN: why would it? Why would anyone think that some revelation about an 18th century relation would change the voting allegiance of the woman married to one of the most influential Republicans in the past century? Family unity is important, but is such a remote connection going to change the vote? I don't think so.

The comments by 'Jay Blanc' have to constitute one of the most stupendously ignorant posts I have ever read. First, one wonders on what basis does he assert that the story is '... phoney ...'? We no more know that it is phony than we know it is correct. Second, how does the story relate only to '... the [b]lack candidate ...'; I thought the story was that both Cheney and Obama were related. Third, how, by any bizarre stretch of anyone's imagination, does anything about this story constitute '... unthinking racism ...'? Jay Blanc should grow up.

According to the stories linked to here at this blog post below, this is not the first time this year this kind of story has been in the media about who Barack Obama is related to.

Why is the distant heritage of Obama something we 'should know today'? Why is this even news? Why is it that it's the Black candidate who gets these phoney news stories about his heritage?

Not to accuse you of raci... Actually, yes, let's accuse you of the exact kind of unthinking racism of letting this kind of phoney race baiting news story through. You should be ashamed.
