You say, “After seeing video of Meyer's other antics, I have to say that I can't blame the guy for trying to get a laugh out of life. I just don't get the joke.”
Perhaps a complex personality is more difficult to understand. It was not a joke. It is not essential to limit oneself serious things. Some can appreciate the slapstick AND the serious.
His “other antics” aren’t relevant to this story. Nor are his words to his father from jail.
