PINEY FLATS, Tenn. — During the last few years, you can’t seem to load your favorite online indie radio station without hearing interesting bands with bizarre, sometimes deplorable names. The New Pornographers (one of my all-time favorites); Frog Eyes; A Place to Bury Strangers; I Love You, But I’ve Chosen Darkness; Wolf Parade; and the veteran Bonnaroo band, My Morning Jacket are a few. I’m almost embarrassed to leave my CDs (yes, I still have CDs, you whippersnappers) lying around for concern that my parents will happen upon them and unleash an Andy Rooney-like rant:
“Fuck Buttons? I’m appalled! What are you listening to these days? Are all the good band names taken? Whatever happened to names like Blue Oyster Cult or the Rolling Stones?”
Don’t let the name fool you, My Morning Jacket is a good band. Their music is a mesmerizing blend of jam rock, country, and neo-psychedelic, with a sound analogous to the Allman Brothers and Neil Young & Crazy Horse. The first time I heard Jim James’ ethereal voice over varied reverb, I was instantly hooked: the song was “Mahgeetah,” from their 2003 album It Still Moves. I wanted to hear more. Two years later, I wasn’t tired of the album yet when Z came out and showed a more experimental side to the band. MMJ was not your typical 70s Southern rock throwback band — no sir. They threw in some carnival music, reggae, and Led Zeppelin riffs just to confuse the folks that wanted to label the band the next Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Their fifth album, Evil Urges, drops on June 10, 2008 — two days before Bonnaroo 2008.
Although I have missed at least two chances to see them live, I hear they give one hell of a performance. They must be pretty good, as this will be the fifth time they play at Bonnaroo. [My Morning Jacket Official Site, Photo: Wikipedia]
this article is a bit of a joke. Evil Urges will be MMJ's fifth album, not third. i noticed the photo is from wikipedia. nice work. i smell a lazy journalist...ahem, i mean, blogger.
