Editor's note: there are potential spoilers for the film “Donnie Darko” below.
The movie industry seems willing to make a sequel out of just about anything. Over the years, the movie-going public has been lambasted with such unnecessary sequels as “Short Circuit 2” (which was actually kind of funny), “Weekend at Bernie's 2” (the dead guy is dead...again!), and “Legally Blonde 2” (not to mention the musical adaptation of the original). Up next on the list? I'll give you a hint: according to someone connected to the film, “Donnie's not in [the new film] but there are meteorites and rabbits.”
“The story picks up seven years after the first film..."Screen Daily reported today that, unbelievably, a sequel to Richard Kelley's 2001 cult classic “Donnie Darko” is set to start filming on May 18. Apparently, someone thought that the movie about a mentally-disturbed teenager who manages to mess around with the space-time continuum and kills himself to save the world warranted a follow-up. Fortunately, Chris Fisher is set to direct. If you aren't aware of Mr. Fisher's body of work, it includes “Nighstalker,” the story of a serial killer, and “Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders,” which is the story of the women in the Talbot family throughout the generations (just kidding, that one's about a serial killer too).
According to the article, “The story picks up seven years after the first film (and Donnie's death) when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.” And maybe Fisher will throw a serial killer or nine in there somewhere.
Because of my adoration of the original film, I have no choice but to hold my judgment of any possible “Darko” sequel until I see it. But dammit, Hollywood, you aren't making it easy. [Screen Daily, IMDB, Legally Blonde: The Musical]
