He may not be as fast as speeding bullet, but Marvel’s “Iron Man” more than lapped this week’s new major opener: “Speed Racer.” “Iron Man” returned to the top of the box office, more than doubling the $20.2 million take for the live-action theatrical release of “Speed Racer,” Bloomberg News reported. It took in $50.5 million. Ashton Kutcher’s counter programming, romantic comedy “What Happens in Vegas” was a close third at $20 million. On May 22, Indy is back. The return of Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” shows even two decades later, he’s still got it, action-wise. But does he still have that golden touch with box office receipts? Without a doubt, Indy will be No. 1. By how much is another question. The under-over has got to be $65 million for it to be a success. Ford should make that easily.
Here are the rest of this weekend’s box office numbers:
1. "Iron Man" $50.5M 2. "Speed Racer" $20.2M 3. "What Happens in Vegas" $20M 4. "Made of Honor" $7.6M 5. "Baby Mama" $5.77M 6. "Forgetting Sarah" $3.78M 7. "Harold & Kumar: ..." $3.16M 8. "Forbidden Kingdom" $1.9M 9. "Nim's Island" $1.33M 10. "Redbelt" $1.14M [Bloomberg.com]
