TAMPA, Fla. – The King of Blues sat on his throne Saturday afternoon and held court for local politicians in a short tribute that witnessed the mayors of Manchester and Coffee County hand Mr. King the key to the city. It was a very pleasant surprise for the audience, though B.B. did not seem terribly impressed by the honor. It certainly did not distract him from his task: putting on a hell of a show.

Now, when I say B.B. King sat on this throne, I mean that literally. He explained to the crowd at the onset that he was suffering from diabetes, and at 82 years old, he needed to sit down to play. Throughout his set, the old pro told charming stories of his blues past, from misadventures with women to adventures on the road. Not only was it a fabulous musical experience, it was a history lesson in the blues. My expectations, as lofty as they were, were fulfilled by what I saw Saturday. With the passing of Bo Diddly still visible in the rearview mirror, I took a moment to reflect on how fortunate I was to witness the greatness of this legendary octogenarian. I hope to get another helping before his time is up.
