It's amazing what five hours of sleep can do for you. Even though I went to bed around 4:30 a.m., I woke up on Saturday feeling pretty damn good a little before 10 a.m. Except for my feet.
It's amazing what five hours of sleep can do for you.Long story short, due to poor choice in footwear, I had a blister from hell on the bottom of my foot, and was having a hard time getting around. But, it was Bonnaroo. I loaded up on water and took the trek down to the hospitality area to get some food (as well as a little beer to help the blister).
The first concert of the day was Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet. Featuring Abigail Washburn and Béla Fleck on banjo, Casey Driessen on cello/violin, and Ben Sollee on cello, the quartet jammed through a set melding Western and Eastern influences. The next concert we saw was Zappa Plays Zappa. All I'll say here is that it was one of the most incredible musical experiences I've ever had. I caught the last part of the Ben Folds show, then went back to the hospitality area for some much-needed nourishment. A quesadilla later, I was ready to sit back, listen to Jack Johnson (who was playing on the What Stage) and do a little work before heading to Pearl Jam.
...I was comforted that I would see Pearl Jam (living legends)...By this time, my blister was pretty painful. I had already resigned myself to the fact that there was no way I would be able to walk to The Other Tent (which was the farthest venue from our campground) to see The Coup or Lupe Fiasco. And while that broke my heart, I was comforted that I would see Pearl Jam (living legends) and what was supposed to be a great show by Kanye West (living in Fantasy Land).
I will never forget seeing Vedder and crew performing live onstage. I have to admit – after their debut album “Ten,” I never listened to much Pearl Jam. So I was ecstatic when they played “Evenflow” during the concert proper and “Black” during the encore. They ended an hour late, putting on the kind of encore that everyone would expect from a band like Pearl Jam at a place like Bonnaroo.
Well, everyone except Kanye West.
I'll spare you the details (which you can read here) and give you the summary: Kanye West was supposed to start his show at 2:45 a.m. He didn't start until around 4:30 a.m. He has given a lot of excuses as to why this happened, but I doubt the numerous concert-goers yelling “Fuck Kanye!” on Sunday morning really care what he says.
