After his controversial performance at Bonnaroo, Kanye West released a statement on his blog directed at festival attendees and organizers alike. In one particularly articulate statement from that post, he said, “THEY TRIED 2 GIVE ME A TIME SLOT WERE IT WAS STILL LIGHT OUTSIDE ... I HAVE A FUCKING LIGHT SHOW DUMB ASS, IT'S NOT CALLED GLOW IN THE DARK FOR NO REASON SQUID BRAINS!” The text, copied directly from Kanye's energetic post, suggests that he either lacks basic keyboarding skills or means this as an insult (or both).

Unfamiliar with the term “squid brain” when used as an insult, I've done a little digging to see just what Kanye may have wanted to convey to those reading his blog, and what I've discovered suggests that “squid brain” might not be quite the insult he intended after all.

The text...suggests that [West] either lacks basic keyboarding skills or means this as an insult (or both).Squids evolved brains that allow them to learn how to catch prey most effectively, according to the Stanford News Service. Much like humans, squids seem to learn by trial and error – just like how it takes a human trial and error to figure out just how long, on average, it takes to piss off thousands of hippies by not being where you're supposed to be at a concert.

Meanwhile, according to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park Web site, not only do dual optic lobes in the squid brain make it clear just how important sight is to the marine animals, squids have the biggest axons (parts of the nerve cell responsible for the transmission of electrical impulses) in the animal kingdom. Scientists study squid axons to learn more about the human brain.

Armed with this information, I can only surmise that Kanye meant the following when he referred to the Bonnaroo organizers as “squid brains”:

  • They learn from trial and error
  • They can see things clearly
  • Scientists should study them to find out more about the rest of us.

If the first two hold true, I couldn't be a happier man, because it means I will never see Kanye West on the Bonnaroo lineup again.

I can take or leave the third.

This is so lame, why do you waste you time trying to cut Kanye down. You actually did research to see if something he said was actually an insult or not. wooww. you are the biggest loser here. why don't you try to improve yourself instead of ripping on others. squid brain.
