Will Smith’s skull-cap wearing superhero “Hancock” soared to the top of the box office this weekend.
The film wrestled up $66 million this July 4th weekend, the second highest grossing weekend for the Fresh Prince, CinemaBlend.com reports. (The first was last year’s blockbuster “I Am Legend.”)
Maybe it’s me, but I think this is a rather weak weekend for Will.
Not considering the $107 million total gross since its early previews Tuesday, the $66 million weekend draw is underwhelming.
First, it’s Will Smith. Second, it’s the July 4th weekend. And third, he had no competition this weekend.
What other major release was there?
None, unless you want to consider “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl,” which, ironically, stars Smith’s daughter. That film came in eighth place with less than $4 million.
So, why wasn’t this a $100 million, 3-day, weekend gross?
I blame the bad reviews from movie critics (and gas prices, a sluggish economy and Fresh Prince fatigue). As much as people think reviews don’t matter, they do, especially when they’re able to poison the well of public sentiment about a film before it comes out.
Here is the rest of this weekend’s Top 10 list: 1. "Hancock" $66M 2. "Wall-E" $33.4M 3. “Wanted” $20,.6M 4. “Get Smart” $11.1M 5. “Kung Fu Panda” $7.5M 6. “The Incredible Hulk” $4.98M 7. “Indiana Jones …” $3.9M 8. “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” $3.6M 9. “Sex and the City” $2.3M 10. “You Don't Mess with the Zohan” $2M [CinemaBlend.com]
