Thousands of players and millions of dollars since it began, the 2008 World Series of Poker is officially on hold until November, with all events except the Main Event complete. Viewers (and the players still in the chip count) will have to wait until then to see coverage of the final table – an untraditional and controversial way of holding the tournament.
Can watching poker on TV really be exciting? You bet it can.Until then, ESPN will air coverage of other events from the World Series, starting at 8 p.m. EST tonight with the final table of the World Championship Pot Limit Hold 'Em tournament. Veterans including Andy Bloch, Phil “The Unabomber” Laak and Mike Sexton vie for victory in this first televised event from the 2008 World Series. (If you can't wait until the episode to learn the winner, visit WSOP.com for results thus far.)
Though the hands have been dealt and the championship has been claimed in this event, ESPN's coverage of WSOP events is always entertaining, especially with longtime announcers Lon McEachern and Norman Chad heading back to the broadcast booth this year.
Can watching poker on TV really be exciting? You bet it can. And if you need proof, check out ESPN's broadcast tonight. [ESPN, WSOP.com]
