“Beverly Hills Chihuahua” again topped the weekend box office for the second consecutive week.
It took in a meager $17.5 million but bested both the new release by Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe – “Body of Lies” – and the new Disney feel-good flick “The Express.” What is more escapist than talking Chihuahuas from Beverly Hills?
“The Express,” the tale of the first black Heisman Trophy winner, had a disappointing sixth place opening with $4.7 million, CinemaBlend.com reports.
I wonder what – if anything – this says about the presidential race, where another black man is looking to make American history.
Is America being post-racial, not wanting to relive the ugly racial history of the past and the South?
Or is it just so fed up with the racially tinged presidential race that the audience didn’t want to see racial strife play off at the box office?
Or was there just enough football this weekend on the tube to satisfy the pigskin cravings?
Either way, America typically loves these football flicks – i.e., “Rudy,” “Invincible” or “Varsity Blues” – I think America just needed an escape given the poor state of the economy, the war and, well, the world. So, what is more escapist than talking Chihuahuas from Beverly Hills?
Clearly, nothing else at this weekend’s box office was.
