Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Courtesy of NIN.com TAMPA, Fla. – It has been 20 years since the release of the epic debut album “Pretty Hate Machine,” and Nine Inch Nails creator and frontman Trent Reznor is still running strong, appearing at Bonnaroo this June. For many – including yours truly – the Cleveland native’s music provided the backdrop for our adolescence and opened our minds to new musical avenues. But this show promises to be more than a trip down memory lane.
On the heels of two recently released albums, one of which is free to download, Reznor and his supporting cast will embark on a tour with rock legends Jane’s Addiction this summer. NIN will finish the American leg of their world tour in Manchester, Tenn., on June 13. As quickly as they arrive, they’ll be off to Austria to play across Europe.
Reznor’s accomplishments with Nine Inch Nails run much deeper than just the millions of records he has sold, the tours he has been on (including the first Lollapalooza), and the work he has done for films (including a cover of “Lost Souls” by Joy Division for “The Crow” soundtrack and the song “The Perfect Drug” for David Lynch’s “Lost Highway”). Nine Inch Nails bridged the gap between the 80s techno-industrial electronica of bands like Kraftwerk, Nitzer Ebb and Front 242 into the mainstream music scene of the 90s and is responsible in part for the proliferation of the modern techno scene.
Nine Inch Nails now stands with eight full albums and countless remixes and B-side releases (all of which can be tracked sequentially using the ‘Halo’ numbering system – the current ‘Halo’ value is 27 for the album “The Slip”). It is my personal hope that they play a little of everything at Bonnaroo: from the early beats of “PHM” to the crunching guitars of “Broken” to the more modern beats of “The Slip.”
So why should you catch Nine Inch Nails? So you can witness a musical pioneer and legend perform live. I can promise I’ll be there.
